the story behind salt and oil

Salt & Oil began as a quiet idea many years ago.

In 2003, after studying beauty therapy and aromatherapy, co-founder Amy Atkinson became fascinated by the world of natural skincare. While exploring products available on the market at the time, she imagined creating her own range of simple, high-quality treatments inspired by nature’s most powerful ingredients.

Back then, the idea felt out of reach. It seemed that creating skincare products required laboratories, chemists, and complex formulations. So the dream was gently set aside as life unfolded in other directions.

Over the years, Amy’s path led her deeper into the world of healing and wellness, studying and practicing a range of holistic modalities. Along the way she developed a deep respect for the body’s natural intelligence and the power of simple, natural ingredients to support wellbeing.

In 2017, she created a small natural vegan skincare brand. The products were handmade and sold at artisan markets, to family an close friends. Although the experience was brief, it reaffirmed something important: the desire to create beautiful, natural products for the mainstream market had never really gone away. Over the following years, Amy continued making products at home for her own use and for friends, refining ideas and exploring ingredients simply out of love for the craft.

Around 2021, another important piece of the puzzle appeared. During a shared journey of personal growth and healing studies, Amy met Tanya, a new friend who would eventually become her business partner and co-founder. Bringing a background in law and a strong understanding of business and brand protection, their partnership created the balance needed to bring the vision to life properly.

With renewed clarity and the right support, Salt & Oil was born.

The name reflects the philosophy at the heart of the brand: simplicity & transparency, and respect for the essential elements the body needs. Salt replenishes vital minerals and restores balance. Oils nourish, soften, and protect the skin. Together they form the foundation of many of nature’s most effective body treatments.

Salt & Oil products are intentionally simple. Rather than relying on complicated formulations or marketing hype, the focus is on carefully selected ingredients that work beautifully together and deliver real nourishment to the body.

Most of the formulations are built around these two fundamental elements — mineral-rich salts and deeply nourishing oils — supported by botanical ingredients and essential oils chosen for their specific benefits.

Each product is handcrafted in small batches with the intention of transforming everyday self-care into a moment of restoration.
